Get to know Gail Spearman, Administrative Assistant for the Washoe County Recorder’s Office.  We asked Gail a series of questions to get to know her better…

Tell us about yourself?

My name is Gail Spearman.  I was born and raised in Eastern Oregon.  I have lived in Reno, NV for the past 29 years.  I have 2 teenage boys.

Where do you work? What is your role with the organization?

I work for the Washoe County Recorder as the Administrative Assistant.

What drew you to records management/information governance originally?

My interest began with my first job in Reno with Founder’s Title Company, my job was to bring the closing documents to the Recorder’s office 2 – 3 times a day for recording and research in the Recorder’s office library.

What do you like most about records management/information governance?

My favorite part of records management is the records themselves.  I love the history of how records were maintained throughout the years and love to read the records and learn about the history of Washoe County.

What do you find the most challenging records management/information governance?

One of the challenges in records management is keeping track of retention periods for various types of records.

What advice do you have for newcomers to our industry?

My advice would be to learn the current system and know what your records are and where they are at before making major changes.

What are your hopes for our industry?

I would like to see this industry continue to advance with modern technology for maintaining our future records and technology to continue to preserve and maintain our oldest records.

If you could pick one theme for your organization and to turn into a book about the organization, what would it be?

“A journey through time – from the past to the future”

How do you define success?

Success is knowing that you were able to make something better or make a difference in the world.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I’m really not that surprising.

What is your hidden talent?

I wouldn’t describe it as a talent, but I love to paint.

What is on your bucket list?

Taking my sister to Graceland.

Which one would you want most – flying cars, robot housekeepers, or moon cities?

Robot housekeeper sounds nice.  Flying cars during the winter.
